Don't get me wrong, I am as interested interested in "Zooming to Brisbane" as the next guy.  However, I think it would be even more interesting to have a button that said "Find Me".  This would perform a service call to perform the lookup to convert the users IP to a location we can plot and zoom.  So anyone aware of a good free service?

Just doing my peice for local tourism ;)
There are services available, VE did have one, Google Gears has an awesome one (uses wifi points - got me within 50m) but all these will put a dependancy upon the services and no doubt impact terms of use etc.
You can also download a file with IP ranges to Lat/Long for free, I've used GeoIP stuff before. So if we just make the interface and impliment one of the options then it leaves it open for oters to impliment one of their choosing?
I could easily setup a webservice in our project with the free GeoIP data if you want? May make a nice example of a sperate service with a crossdomain policy file (as it will run on a different port)?
